Skates & Skateboards

  • Most injuries from skates and skateboards occur to arms and legs. However, injuries to the head from skates and skateboards can be serious.
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children younger than five years of ages should not use skateboards. They are not developmentally prepared to protect themselves from injury.
  • Children who skate and ride skateboards should wear helmets and protective padding to prevent injury.
  • There are no standards for helmets, therefore bicycle helmets are recommended.
  • Skates and skateboards should never be used near traffic.
  • Children should not ride on streets or highways.
