Most injuries from skates and skateboards occur to arms and legs. However, injuries to the head from skates and skateboards can be serious.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children younger than five years of ages should not use skateboards. They are not developmentally prepared to protect themselves from injury.
Children who skate and ride skateboards should wear helmets and protective padding to prevent injury.
There are no standards for helmets, therefore bicycle helmets are recommended.
Skates and skateboards should never be used near traffic.
